The burning solar disk descended among aquamarine clouds on the horizon beyond the Nicoya Peninsula across the gulf. It painted an orange trail on the Pacific Ocean’s light green waters. The mountains on the peninsula became violet under the late sunlight. We paused to enjoy the beauty of the moment.
El disco incandescente del sol descendía entre nubes aguamarina en el horizonte, más allá de la Península de Nicoya. Pintaba un camino anaranjado en las aguas verde claro del Pacífico. Las montañas de la península se tornaron violeta bajo la luz del atardecer. Nos detuvimos a disfrutar la belleza del momento.
We had found a thick plastic bag lodged on exposed rocks as the tide ebbed. We’d picked it up and used it to collect trash: plastics, styrofoam, electric wire, and other junk. We’d covered a small area of rocks and beach, and in a few minutes we’d filled the bag. We were trying to care for Playa Herradura, for the Pacific, and for our natural home. But a bit of despair at the amount of microtrash threatened to ruin our sunset walk. Taking in the beauty of Nature at sundown restored our joy. We found the balance we needed–to care and to enjoy.
Habíamos encontrado una bolsa de plástico grueso atrapada en las rocas expuestas por la marea baja. La habíamos recogido y usado para recolectar basura: plásticos, estereofón, cable eléctrico y otros desechos. Cubrimos una área pequeña de rocas y playa y en pocos minutos habíamos llenado la bolsa. Intentábamos cuidar de Playa Herradura, el Pacífico y nuestro hogar natural. Pero el desánimo por la cantidad de microbasura amenazaba con arruinar nuestra caminata al atardecer. Contemplar la belleza de la Naturaleza al ponerse el sol restauró nuestro gozo. Encontramos el balance que necesitábamos: cuidar y gozar.
